Spotify for Artists India — How to Claim and Optimize Your Artist Profile
Once your song is live on Spotify, you have access to one of the most powerful free tools any independent artist gets: Spotify for Artists. It controls how your profile looks, lets you pitch new releases for playlists, shows you real listener data, and unlocks features like Canvas and Marquee. Most artists never set it up properly. Here's how.
Step 1: Wait for your first song to go live
You can't claim a Spotify for Artists profile until at least one song is live on Spotify under your artist name. Once Auripy delivers your release and it appears on Spotify (usually 2–5 days), you can claim immediately.
Step 2: Sign up at artists.spotify.com
- Go to artists.spotify.com
- Sign in with your personal Spotify account (the listener account you use)
- Click "Get access"
- Search for your artist name
- Confirm the right profile (verify the song that appeared after distribution)
- Submit a verification request — Spotify approves within 1–2 days
You can have multiple team members access one Spotify for Artists profile. Add managers, label partners, or collaborators with view-only or admin permissions.
Step 3: Customize your artist profile
Profile photo
Use a high-quality square portrait, minimum 750×750 px. Spotify recommends a clean shot with strong contrast — this is your face in every recommendation card.
Header image
2660×1140 pixels. Lifestyle, performance, or moody artistic shots work best. Don't use plain text or your logo here — Spotify will reject it.
Artist bio
You get 1,500 characters. Use 300–600. Write in third person ("Aryan Sharma is a Hindi indie songwriter from Mumbai…"). Mention your genre, your hometown, your inspirations, and one notable career moment. Update every 3–6 months.
Artist pick
Pin a song, album, playlist, or merch item at the top of your profile. Change this with every new release.
Social links
Connect Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and your website. These show as icons on your profile.
Step 4: Set up Spotify Canvas
Canvas is a 3–8 second looping vertical video that plays behind your song on mobile. Songs with Canvas get 145% more shares and 20% more streams (Spotify's own data).
Canvas specs
- Vertical 9:16 aspect ratio
- Minimum 720×1280 pixels, MP4 format
- 3–8 seconds long
- Seamless loop (last frame matches first)
- No text-only, no Spotify logo, no other platform watermarks
Tools: CapCut, VN Editor, or upload from your phone camera roll. Add Canvas to every release within 48 hours of going live.
Step 5: Pitch your next release for editorial playlists
This is the single most underused feature. When you have an upcoming release scheduled at least 7 days in advance, Spotify for Artists shows a "Pitch a song" option.
Pitching checklist
- Pick the strongest song from your upcoming release
- Select genre tags carefully — primary + 2 secondaries
- Select mood tags — energetic, chill, romantic, etc.
- Write 200–500 words about the song — story, context, why it's special
- Mention if you're pitching for India-specific editorial playlists (Indie India, Fresh Finds India, Hot Hits Hindi)
Submit the pitch at least 14 days before release. Auripy lets you set release dates 4 weeks out for exactly this reason.
Step 6: Use the dashboard data
The Audience tab tells you:
- Where your listeners live (cities, countries)
- Age and gender breakdown
- Listening behavior (when they listen, on which devices)
- Discovery sources (algorithmic, editorial, listener's own, search)
Use this to plan: if 40% of your listeners are in Delhi, plan a Delhi show. If most listeners discover you via "Daily Mix", that's algorithmic — your music fits well into auto-curation.
Step 7: Marquee (paid) and Showcase
Marquee is Spotify's paid promotional product. It sends a full-screen notification about your new release to users who are likely to enjoy it based on listening history. Costs around $750–$1,500 (₹62k–₹125k) per campaign — usually overkill for indie artists. Stick with organic promotion until you have 10k+ monthly listeners.
Step 8: Pre-save links
For your next release, generate a pre-save link via Auripy. Share it on Instagram, WhatsApp, and your bio for 7–14 days before release. Pre-saves concentrate first-day streams, which signals to Spotify's algorithm that the release matters.
Common mistakes
- Never updating the bio — same outdated text from years ago
- No Canvas — leaves engagement on the table
- Pitching the day before release (too late)
- Pitching genre as "Pop" when the song is clearly hip-hop
- Forgetting to switch the Artist Pick after a release goes stale
Apple Music for Artists too
While we're here: also claim artists.apple.com. Same idea, different platform. Apple Music is growing fast among premium Indian users.
Final thoughts
Spotify for Artists is free, takes 30 minutes to set up, and unlocks features that paid PR companies charge ₹50,000 to provide. Every artist with a distributed song should have it claimed and optimized within a week of going live. Distribution puts you on Spotify; Spotify for Artists makes Spotify push you.
